You ask and I deliver. This time, in my quick Q+A series is, what is a suspension in cosmetics? I was asked to cover this question two weeks ago and it’s a great suggestion.

The more the skincare industry progresses, the more education is put in the forefront of that growth. Hence, knowing these cosmetic terms is going to be super useful.

Suspension definition in beauty

Suspension’s are formulas that are used to mix together ingredients that don’t normally mix. They are usually clear solutions with visible particles.

In the beauty industry, suspensions are widely used. You can find them in serums, sunscreens and shampoos.

The chemical definition for suspension

A heterogeneous (consisting of diverse ingredients) mixture of a finely distributed solid in a liquid.

The main characteristic of a suspension is that the solid is not dissolved into the liquid.

Thanks to brand’s like The Ordinary, these terms are becoming more and more common. They even have a product called ‘Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%‘.

To remember the definition of a suspension, all you have to do is think about a formula that combines two physical states, liquid and solids.

They are used in skincare to mix together ingredients that wouldn’t normally mix. Therefore, increasing the efficacy of a product.
