Salicylic Acid Vs Benzoyl Peroxide

Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are two of the most well-known acne-fighting ingredients because they both work to remove dead skin cells.

Due to their prominence in fighting acne it can be confusing to know which one is right for you.

Well, here is a very easy to understand, cheat sheet about the differences of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

Salicylic acid Benzoyl peroxide
Type of acne it works best against Blackheads and whiteheads Mild pustules
Skin type Best for sensitive skin If you have any type of skin condition i.e
eczema
seborrheic dermatitis
psoriasis
it is best to steer clear of this one
Side effects (caused by over-use of a product)Hives
Itching
Peeling skin
Stinging or tingling
Can cause extreme dryness

Is it safe to use both at the same time?

Generally, no.

Applying both products on the same area of skin — even at different times of day — can increase your risk for excessive drying, redness, and peeling.

A safe way to use them in conjunction is to use them in different places. So, salicylic acid may be a good all-over method to treat and prevent breakouts, while benzoyl peroxide may be applied as a spot treatment only.
