This time it’s all about your environment, as we draw closer to winter (exceptions if you live in Australia) we find that our skin is more fragile than ever. Continue reading for a more indepth look at what you can do to lessen the winter damage to your skin.
The major problem that is caused by the transition from summer to winter is the massive amount of moisture that slowly gets sucked from your skin. This deprivation of moisture is caused by small things that you may not even realise are affecting your skin’s health. Taking long hot baths/showers can dissolve the protective barrier in the skin and that will eventually lead to dryness. Even hanging out in the dry indoors for a long time can dry out your skin. Among many other things this dry air that you are creating artificially literally sucks moisture from your skin. The aftermath of losing all of this is flaky, dry skin especially if you’re already prone to eczema or other dry skin conditions.
Central heating and sudden changes in atmospheric temperatures can also massively impact your skin. The process of going from a really cold outside to a really warm inside causes the capillaries in your face to contract and expand rapidly and this could lead to broken veins and skin redness.
Comfort eating, another ritual that comes along with the winter weather. However you probably could have guessed this one isn’t great for you but it isn’t just you waist that is affected. A diet high in refined carbohydrates can cause flare ups and could even trigger acne.
Although it is hard to avoid these things all together they add up so try your best to reduce these activities.
So here is my quick and easy guide to get your through your changeover from summer to winter:
- Replace your lightweight moisturizers for heavy duty creams – like Embryolisse Lait Creme Concetrate – £13 at Boots Uk – Heavy creams are a must in winter for that extra barrier between your skin and the cold air.
- Serums are a must in winter. The extra penetration that comes from a serum is going to help hydrate your skin to the lowest levels. Try Hydraluron – £24.99 at Boots Uk
- Invest in a humidifier or if you can’t afford one just put a few glasses of water near your radiator and it will radiate moisture through the air! Basically doing the same thing a humidifier does but a lot cheaper.
- To prevent the capillary breakage that I mentioned earlier you should wrap up warm and don’t over do the use of central heating. This should minimize the difference between outside and inside environmental temperatures.
- Stay well away from refined carbs, of course wholesome grains are much better and more acceptable. Also drink chamomile and green tea for their anti – inflammatory and anti – irritant properties.
- Never underestimate the power of a sheet masks! They are a great way to infuse your skin with lots of hydration almost instantaneously. I literally use any and all hydrating masks I can find be it expensive or cheap.
